Had I stayed in my garden nurturing my red hot poker it wouldn't have happened. But I didn't. I dragged myself to London to get into Lord of the Mince mode, and the sly fox saw his chance. He nipped over the fence and all that is left of Jodie, Jordan and Margaret is a few feathers. My poor girls.
Miraculously my favourite hen, Maureen, survived unscathed, along with her three chicks, Cartier, Ahmed and Nicolas. I may have to bring them on tour with me to keep them safe.
If I've got bird shit on my suit you'll know why.

Hello Punters.

To become a blogger is not what I hoped for. It sounds a bit geography teacher-ish to me. Twittering seems like the cyber equivalent of flashing, therefore blogging must be far worse. Still, here goes. I feel as if I'm submitting myself to some sort of voluntary open-brain surgery whereby my every thought will be accessible to all sorts of riff-raff. And as you may know, I like to keep myself nice.

So. May 31st 2009. Just back from the Hay Festival. Last night I had a 'session' with the delightful Fiona Lindsay at 7p.m. and then signed some books. Eye to eye contact with the general public is always a worry. One in five is barking mad, so a little psychic protection is always advisable. On this occasion I have to report that most punters were clean and fragrant, although the 1 in 5 rule did still apply. You know who you are.

At ten p.m in the Guardian Tent I introduced the Burlesque artiste Immodesty Blaize, who did her routine on the rocking horse - look to the right, if you haven't yet had the pleasure.

I have always previously introduced Immodesty from the stage of KoKo's in Camden Town, where sweaty, tumescent men are pressed against the barrier in front of the stage. This being Hay the spotlight lit up so many silver heads it was like seeing a field full of hay stacks on a frosty morning. Miss Blaize was fabulous as always, and I dare say one or two pairs of corduroy trousers will be visiting the dry cleaners this week as a result. Pensioner discounts, of course.

I left The Swan Hotel at nine this morning, much refreshed by my luke warm bath, (the warmer variety not being available it seems) and embarked on the five hour journey back to Kent. Wales may have rolling hills and breath taking views but Kent has the added attraction of a boyfriend who cooks Sunday lunch. Read all the Sunday Papers. Aren't M.P's frightful? And I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of Carole Malone, that's for sure. She may name and shame me as a blogger. It's not the image a published novelist is after, let's face it.
