The Bolds Books for Children

Julian Clary selected for World Book Day

Julian Clary joins a stellar line-up of authors representing World Book Day 2018. Following the huge success of his children's series, The Bolds, Julian has written a special story about his much-loved hyena family, which sees them move across the ocean from African safari park to England.

The Bolds' Great Adventure is one of the 11 official World Book Day titles available from late February, when children in the UK and Ireland will be given a £1 token to claim their chosen book.

World Book Day, which aims to encourage children and young people to read for pleasure, takes place on 1 March 2018 with various events leading up to the big day.

“Joyful” - Telegraph, Best Holiday Reading for Kids

Meet The Bolds with Julian Clary and David Roberts at the Oxford Literary Festival on March 30th

“Funny and clever with a good dose of yucky humour. Children will appreciate the wry digs at the nonsense of modern living and Roberts’ illustrations are an absolute delight.” - The Bookseller, Fiona Noble.
“My two children and I all love The Bolds. An allegory for feeling like an outsider and is written in the most imaginative and sensitive way.” - Kate Garraway, Mail on Sunday.

Mr and Mrs Bold are just like you and me: they live in a nice house (in Teddington), they have jobs (like writing Christmas cracker jokes) and they love to have a bit of a giggle. One slight difference: they're hyenas. Yes, that's right - they're covered in fur, have tails tucked into their trousers, and they really, really like to laugh.

So far, the Bolds have managed to keep things under wraps, even when their children Bobby and Betty were born. But the nosy man next door smells a rat (or a hyena), and a trip to the local wildlife park, and the brilliantly wacky heist that results, could be the end of Teddington's best-kept secret. Whatever will the neighbours think?

For children aged 8 and above.

Julian says:
"I wanted to write a children's BOOK to relive the thrill I used to get as a child entering a fictional world. The idea came from stories I used to make up for myself as a child, and I grew up in Teddington " a very suburban place with tree-lined streets and a nice park " so it seemed right and proper to set it there. I am thrilled to have the wonderful illustrator David Roberts bring The Bolds to life for me. He has the ability to convey my humour brilliantly and his drawings are always funny and endearing. Mrs Bold's hats are a particular delight!"
